Jewelry Design across across countries and continents

A recipient of Fulbright Scholarship and TEDx fellow, Amina Rizwan is a graduate of MFA in Metalsmithing from Cranbrook Academy of Arts in Michigan, USA. Currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Jewellery Design and Gemological Sciences at Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design, Lahore, Amina’s practices have extended to teaching, making, research and speaking about critical and reflective investigations pertaining to crafts, jewelry and objects within contemporary and historical contexts. She is also a writer for Art Jewelry Forum, a scholarly magazine and foremost authority on establishing critical discourse on contemporary jewelry and objects across countries and continents.

Objects as Artifacts

Furqan Habib is a practicing architect and a product developer, with an interest in design as a problem solving and tool creating exercise. His main focus is how to convert natural systems and processes into digital systems in order to beget new kind of objects. Thanks to digital age and cad/com we have entered a new stage were we can constantly create and iterate our design. The question is how can we use these systems as tools to create new tangible and intangible meanings. The aim of this presentation is to present objects that have been creating as mentioned above.

"Gape within" (an immersive interactive installation)

Mehwish Abid is an architect, academic and a published researcher. She runs her own practice [(Studio of architecture, research & design (S A R D)].Her research focusses on the relationship amid philosophical moorings of modernism, authenticity (being) and of urbanism/urban form. The project that will be presented envisioned to engage the viewer, ignite awareness and build a sense of consciousness towards experience, heritage and context. The immersive, interactive and inclusive character of the installation enabled the viewer to use various senses from sound, sight and cognition.

Owning the Narrative

Manal Abdullah is an architect and teacher by profession, and an illustration and cross-disciplinary design enthusiast otherwise. Her exploration of visual narratives has allowed her to inculcate the art of story-telling into different facets of her design practice, from developing narratives in spatial design to producing on-stage sets for preconceived ideas. According to her, the power of story-telling translates into almost all forms of conveying information. In her presentation, she plans to identify the factors in which involve an audience into a visual narrative.

Affan Baghpati is a graduate of Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi from the department of Fine Art and is now enrolled for his post graduate Art and Design Studies at SVAD, Beaconhouse National University Lahore. He has performed at Art galleries during his undergraduate school years. His recent work includes installations using taxidermy, discarded furniture and metal artifacts. His studio practice revolves around ideas of taste and aesthetics where design and form are some of his key concerns.

Literary Love in Lahore

Mehr F Husain is a Lahore based journalist. She was a columnist for Mail Today/MailOnline (The Daily Mail). She has worked as Features editor at The Friday Times and Assistant editor at Good Times. She has had short stories published by Oxford University press and Mongrel Books. Mehr is editor of 'Multan: A Spiritual Legacy', a book that was presented to Queen Elizabeth. She has also performed stand-up comedy as the opening act for Lahore’s first all female troupe Auratnaak. Her work has appeared or been quoted in DAWN, Herald, Pakistan Today, The News, Times of India, Libas International, The Diplomat, Pakistan Link and she was featured in The Economist's 1843. Mehr holds a MSc. in Asian Politics from SOAS, University of London and a BSc. in Politics with Business Management (Hons.) from Queen Mary, University of London. She was also accepted into a MPhil in Modern South Asian Studies at St. Edmunds College, Cambridge.

Renaissance Man

With degrees in Fine Arts, from the National College of Arts in Lahore and Parsons The New School For Design in New York, Pakistani artist Rehan Bashir's initial practice was based around painting, drawing and printmaking but has now evolved into a more transdisciplinary pursuit. Under the tutelage of Nahid Siddiqui, a renowned Kathak dance exponent, Rehan, has been exploring classical dance and performance and draws inspiration from Yoga and meditation. He has been teaching Yoga in Lahore since 2014. He has very recently performed at the Dakshina Dance Festival in Washington DC, US and at the Zofin Palace in Prague, Czech Republic. He designs bespoke bridal couture, with a special focus on craft and tradition, at The House of Kamiar Rokni, which has been regularly showcasing it's work in Lahore and internationally.

Desires of the Commoners

Sarah Mumtaz did her Bachelors in Printmaking in 2005 and later did her Masters in Visual arts in 2010 both from National College of Art. She started her practice with printmaking and later adding embroidery, photomontages to her work practice. During her Masters she introduces herself to completely different
medium, which was performed. Later she went back to her basics and
started drawings again so now her work is basically an amalgam of
embroidery, performance and drawing.
