VOL 28

November 24, 2016
@ The Park Theater and Movie Cafe

They say there are two seasons in Manitoba: winter and construction. Well, most of those orange construction signs have been removed from our roadways and we know winter’s coming. There is a way to keep warm in late November, though – put away your shovels for a few hours, stop worrying about the snow and join us at the Park Theatre for PechaKucha Night.

There are no tickets being sold for this event. Admission is free, although we do accept donations at the door (a suggested: $10).

As one third of the Winnipeg based production company, Build Films, Trevor Gill has shot and directed films focused on the preservation of land and traditional Inuit values throughout the Canadian Arctic. For him, life is a quest for knowledge collected through experiences, adventure and the meeting of minds. A camera in hand affords him the opportunity to travel, tell stories, meet people, and explore new landscapes and cultures a long the way. This past summer he journeyed along the coasts of Greenland, Baffin Island, and Labrador on an educational expedition led by the Ottawa organization Students On Ice.

Laina Brown is an art student at the U of M, a social advocate, and owner of her own business Laina Brown Photography. She loves to enter into people’s monumental events or everyday lives to document and artistically render their memories as a collaborator with them. This love has taken her to spaces like Winnipeg’s “Meet Me at the Bell Tower”, to spaces such as Auschwitz and Treblinka with the March of Remembrance and Hope, to the boarders of Eastern Turkey, and to beautiful weddings all across Western Canada. In each place it is the people she is most interested in, and how they make meaning from their environments - listening and compassion as the keys to successful photography.

Keeping Youthful

@ VOL 28 ON NOV 24, 2016

Jeff Boschmann has spent most of his life either being a youth, studying youth, or working with youth in some capacity. While that's really helped with the whole "feeling young forever" thing, he’s found that age and responsibility are really starting to catch up. With that, life has always been a constant series of turning corners and being surprised, which isn't a complaint, it keeps things interesting!
