The Great Loves of My Life: food and travel

Hannah McDonald-Moniz is a traveler, storyteller, list-maker, and food enthusiast. Hannah speaks about the two great loves of her life: food and travel. While eating her way around the world, she has realised that food is truly the way to a country’s heart, and that through the particularities and traditions surrounding cuisine, we can learn about the history, culture, and spirit of a place.

Vientiane Art Education Collage

Hiroshi Yoshioka spent several years teaching art to art teachers and students at a Lao school. What materials did they work with? What did they create? For his PechaKucha, Hiroshi will talk about his students and show some of their artwork, and discuss his thoughts about the role of art in Laos. These are all thoughts that grew out of spending time with his teaching colleagues and students.

My Work With A Small Khmu Village

Speaker Mali Kamonrat Chayamarit is a cultural officer at UNESCO by day, a professional florist at her shop Malibarn Flower shop by night, and a village development and poverty reduction advocate by heart. "I talk about the importance of doing things with love and passion, and how important commitment is in life. I will share my story of how I began working with a small Khmu village in Luang Prabang six years ago, that is now the basis for my flower shop, Malibarn.”

Angkor Wat

Alison Saracena traveled to Angkor Wat in Cambodia and took over a thousand pictures. She is interested in the decorative details of wall reliefs and sculptures that people often overlook. For her presentation she chose 20 of her favorite photos, and invites you to notice the amazing details.

Random Things of Olé Scovill

Olé Viravong Scovill is an artist who was born and raised in Vientiane. Her presentation depicts her life as an artist, where work is art and art is work. Her vibrant and expressionist style evokes emotions and her use of organic forms and pattern showcase a distinct contemporary edge.

20:20 Vision

Chris Lister had been in Laos for about six months after living in Singapore, London and Tokyo. His presentation is about a year of transition in 2015, as he moved from Singapore to Vientiane, as well as other places in between. Listen as he preforms an original song which narrates stories of travel and change, while presenting a collection of photographs he took of various locations he visited during the transition.

Pages From The Book Of Walls: visual & imagined journeys

"Walls may have ears, but they also have stories." Poems reveal themselves in Catherine O'Brien's work, in which images, stories, and physical objects intersect. Catherine is an artist and teacher living in Vientiane who finds hidden stories in what is not clear or even visible, such as the outline of a faded poster on a wall.

A Cleaner, Greener Vientiane

Serge Doussantousse considers himself a French citizen of the world. In 2010 he started investigating local rubbish collections and causes of pollution by following the trucks that collected his household waste in Vientiane. Since then his project Green Vientiane has led several cleaning, greening and recycling-reusing initiatives across Vientiane.
