The Beauty of Complexity

"It is very obvious how natural selection can create diversity, but it's not very obvious how it can create complexity."

Andrew Hart is a software developer with a degree in Chemistry. In his presentation for PechaKucha Night Asheville: "The Art of Science," Andrew describes Stephen Wolfram's computational system of cellular automata and the model that they provide for understanding how complexity can arise in nature from a very basic set of rules.

Designing Inclusion

What if complex socio-political/economic systems mimicked natural systems? Would they be more sustainable? More equitable?

Tracy Kunkler, principal at the social enterprise consulting firm, Social Profit Strategies, described at PechaKucha Night Asheville: "The Art of Science" a governance model called "Circle Forward." It is a consent-based system of governance that attempts to connect bridge  complex webs of people and organizations in a sustainable way.

Multi-percussionist, composer and educator River Guerguerian took the audience at PechaKucha Night Asheville: "The Art of Science" on a sonic journey toward greater awareness of the significance of sound in our lives and of the power of listening.

The New Chemistry

Applied chemical sciences can't address the problems of society without including… society. Stepping back to look at the big picture and Chemistry's place in it, Tammy Hawley shared about her work in "The New Chemistry" at PechaKucha Night Asheville: "The Art of Science."

Tammy is an undergraduate student at the University of North Carolina, Asheville, and a 2015 National Science Foundation Scholar.
