Woodlawn Cemetary: Motown's Final Resting Place

John Milroy is from the Detroit area and Motown is one of his favorite subjects. In this talk he tours the Motor City's rich history via Woodlawn Cemetary - the final resting place of many famous music legends who resided nearby.

"If the grey stones of these fences could talk, or more accurately, sing, they would tell the story of Detroit through the rise and fall of the civil rights movement, through the halcyon days of Motown."

Making Life Happen; the rebuilding of Benton Harbor

"How do we go from living in circumstance to living in choice? How do we rebuild our city with heart, with resiliance?"

Jerry Price
 remembers his family moving from Brooklyn to Benton Harbor Michigan in 1969 hoping to find more opportunity. Jerry's story recounts the change that happened after he went away to college and came back in 2003.

Glass is HOT!

"What began for me and others who participated in a 1972 Chihuly workshop, 40 years later is an amazing expression of the creative spirit captured in glass." 

In "Glass is HOT" from PechaKucha St. Joseph Vol. 2 Jerry Catania share's his love for making glass art. He dives into his interesting history of being a student of famed experimental glass sculptor Dale Chihuly and how that experience led him to pioneer and cultivate over a decade of healthy and successful creative workshops and programs with a community that cherishes its new found glass culture in St. Joseph/Benton Harbor, Michigan where he and his wife Kathy run the Water Street Glassworks.

21 Winters in Israel

No matter what Mary Nigro was going through, the first question to her doctors was "Can I still go to Israel?" Her first trip was at age 56, but it changed her life. Mary shares a story of her 21 winters in Israel where she's learned that having passion and living the right way will get you far in life. 

"If you haven't ever tried to back a camel out of a bus, you've got some exciting things ahead!"

Mary is from Niles, MI and has been retired from Whirlpool Corp for 20 years.

Rob White grew up in South Bend, IN and now lives in St. Joseph MI. Rob has a BA of Arts in English, and Masters of Arts in English from Indiana University with dual concentrations in literature and creative writing.

Invisible - The Art of Motion Picture Editing

"What does editing mean in the context of cinema? Dan takes us through the history of editing beginning with the origins of the motion picture. In a world of shorter attention spans and limited time, editing is a crucial tool for story telling."

Eight Days in May: How an Invisible Island Taught Us to See

Dixie Inocencio & Becky Wehmer live and work a few miles away from each other in Benton Harbor, MI. Becky has been active in the creation of a local glassblowing studio. Dixie coaches a local baseball team and is also an architect. She wants you to know they don't speak Spanish in this presentation.

"Even in the age of the internets, Cuba was proving to be alarmingly elusive. With a few days to go, we still did not know how to get there, where we would stay, what we would do, or how much money we would bring. It was like trying to find Shangri La, it was like trying to find Narnia."

The Year-Long Adventures of the Blue Shoes

"I began looking at the world asking 'where could I put the blue shoes in this setting'?"

In The Year-Long Adventures of the Blue Shoes from PechaKucha Night St. Joseph Vol. 2, interdisciplinary scholar Michael R. Hill shares the story of how during a creative exercise from a 2013 Teacher Workshop on Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity at School of the Art Institute Chicago, his blue Nike Hyper Enforcer shoes became the inspiration of a year long visual daily blog, full of creative adventure, and a bit of hilarity.

 This was "PechaKucha of the Day" on Monday, Octobern 26th, 2015.

Desert Rose

Julee Laurent-Clancy is the Director of Development for Therapeutic Equestrian Center. Julee grew up in Florida and Los Angeles, and has been a resident of St. Joe/Benton Harbor for 13 years. Traveling is not a hobby for Julee - it is a need. Her travels have taken her to Japan, Italy, Costa Rica, Belize, Spain and 40 of the United States. 

One day Julee decided to drive cross-country from Los Angeles to Florida, pick up her kids and let them meet the celebrities of Hollywood. She packed up her convertable and left in the dead of night. What happens when you're in the middle of the Mojave desert with an empty gas tank?
