Brent Houzenga is a New Orleans-based painter and musician who could be the epitome of reckless youth growing in Fulton, IL and being told he can be whatever he wanted.  Today new father, Brent’s projects consists of painting of dead people.  He shares with us his idea of finding and achieving flow in his work and life.

Fighting Gods and Monsters

Dylan Tete is the Executive Director and founder of Bastion Community of Resilience, an innovative housing program for returning warriors with lifelong rehabilitative needs. Dylan earned a Bachelors of Science in Economics and Systems Engineering at West Point, as well as an MPH at the LSU School of Public Health. During a combat tour in Iraq as second-in-command of an Infantry company, Dylan established multiple recovery projects in collaboration with the Department of State. He moved to New Orleans in 2005 where he managed the construction of several FEMA housing facilities after Hurricane Katrina.

In this presentation, Dylan shares his path of finding redemption and discovering that the only way around something is through it.

In Harnessing Wild Horses from PechaKucha Night New Orleans Volume 18 Musa Alves is a DJ, photographer, international fun haver, cheeseburger enthusiast, Brazilian redneck. In this presentation Musa goes chronologically through her life because reckless youth has been a constant theme. She is the product of a Mississippi Delta Debutant and a Brazilian bassist.  In her life, she has fallen off the horse a few times, but has always managed to get back up. Whether reckless youth has led to ambition or ambition has led reckless youth, Musa has always carved her own path by harnessing the wild horses that drives you to do the things that scare you, and challenge you, and make you vulnerable.

Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost

Pauline Patterson owns the local favorite pub Finn McCool’s and bar/restaurant Treo with the love of her life and husband, Stephen. Pauline grew up as a daydreamer in Northern Ireland in the mist of turmoil and among armed soldiers and war wreckage. She shares with us principles and values she has learned from her parents of working hard, fixing what is broken and living life with passion because age is but a number and there is plenty of time to reckless.

An Addiction to the Rawness

Jack of all trades, Ross Lunz, is an artist, silver smith, carpenter, firefighter, former commercial fisherman, EMT to list only a few of the many hats Ross has worn throughout his life so far. Asking whether the path he has chosen has been reckless or a series of calculated risks.  Ross admits that he is addicted to the rawness.

Ross evacuated New Orleans the Sunday before Katrina and retuned Wednesday with a 14 foot boat and was a freelance USAR (Urban Search and Rescue). First rescuing people than transitioning to animals.  Ross learned that he had an aptitude for rescue and became a firefighter. 

All Ross’s rich and diverse history bleeds into his studio practice.  His work tells a story, often about New Orleans.  Now Ross and his wife are onto the next chapter in their lives and moving to New Mexico after being in New Orleans for the past 14 years.

Where Do I Go From Here?

Justin Shiels is a creative director, graphic designer and marketing strategist whose greatest joy is making things happen. Formerly he ran a local publication called Go INVADE that celebrated the people, places and projects here in New Orleans. Currently, he helps build brands through his boutique design and marketing studio This Creative Lab. Justin talks about how the ideas that we have as children and ideas that we have in college are the ones that teach us who we are.
