Dawn of the Unread

@ VOL 2 ON JUN 20, 2014

A huge fan of reading, James Walker wants to address some issues with modern reading: engaging kids in reading and disengaging them from their computers; making libraries a focal point of communities; and reigniting appreciation for physical reading over digital reading. For James, the answer to these problems was zombies. After many collaborations, Dawn of the Unread- an interactive graphic novel- was created. Reading in the modern age is no longer a passive act, and James has come up with creative and fun ways to engage all ages of the community in sharing a love for reading.

"Presentation of the Day" on July 17, 2014.

@ VOL 2 ON JUN 20, 2014

People and words, that’s Ben Braber's thing. Ben is a writer and uses language – words and ways of combining words – to build bridges and bind people together As a copywriter, he works with people in organisations who want to communicate with other people. As a journalist, he gives people a voice and tells people about other people. As a historian, he reviews what makes us the way we are. In his workshops, he trains people to write successfully for business, education, charity and the public sector.

The Dilettante Society

@ VOL 2 ON JUN 20, 2014

The Dilettante Society is a newborn Nottingham based alliance of novice artistes, aesthetes, degenerates and decadents intent on arousing creative dawdlers and daydreamers out of their dwellings to find mischief and inspiration. They aim to entertain, suggest and inspire your right brain with ideas, anecdotes and alliteration. So have a gander whilst you sip your coffee or gin and think about all the beauties around in this world.

Nottingham’s UNESCO ‘City of Literature’ Bid

@ VOL 2 ON JUN 20, 2014

Pippa Hennessey has not been writing for long and always felt like the odd one out in classes or meetings where she meets people who have been writing since they were foetuses. Her tendency (even though she always hated the stuff) is towards writing poetry. She is a member of Nottingham Writers’ Studio, where she is on the board as the Project Delivery Coordinator and is the Secretary of the Nottingham Poetry Society. I’m on the steering committees for theNottingham Festival of Words and the Beeston Poets.

Public Sociology Network

@ VOL 2 ON JUN 20, 2014

Jeffrey Goatcher is a lecturer at Nottingham Trent University on the subject of public sociology. Jeffrey argues that all sociology is public, because we are within the sphere that we are trying to study and we can never be outside of it. According to Jeffrey, sociology has always been outward facing since it was dreamt up- it is about understanding what society is in order to keep it from falling apart- or in order to put it back together when it does 'break.'
