Restoring Liberia's History

Jeff Topham and his brother set out to retake old pictures of their childhood home in Liberia; along the way, they ended up restoring the history of their old country, exposing a new generation to photos of a near unrecognizable Liberia, before rebels and war tore the country apart. The project collected photographs of Liberia from various expats, and eventually culminated in a gallery exhibition.

Clean Water for Life

Bradley Pierik (of Twothirds Water) has been studying the systems by which third-world countries purify their water to make it safe for human consumption. When waterborne diseases account for the majority of hospitalizations, a filtration system can literally be a lifesaver. Bradley goes into depth on his research and a prototype filter he's made while performing outreach in countries all over.

Chipping Away at Mining Policy

Genevieve Hume and her husband Kevin run a goldsmithing and jewelry business in Vancouver which has her working with artisanal and small scale miners. Mine collapses, mercury poisoning, child labor, and militia violence are among the threats to this industry, and Genevieve tells us how she and her husband started an organization to certify, support and train these laborers.

Changing the Game for Girls in India

Ish Jhaj was always a bit of a tomboy as a young girl, and football (the one you play with your foot) has always been her game. Now she's begun organizing a girls soccer program in a rural suburb of Punjab, India. What the girls lacked in coordination, they more than made up for in heart, and now Ish has put together several mini leagues, and has donated shoes and clothing to the region.

Protecting a Community, an Ecosystem

When Karen Tam Wu began her work in forest ethics, she never expected to be standing up to the CEO of the Shell Oil Company. What began with the company setting up three fracking stations near the headwaters in northern British Columbia, became a community-led campaign to stop the oil company from poisoning the groundwater that is so crucial to the surrounding area.

In Leave My Heart in Vancouver from PechaKucha Night Vancouver Vol. 28, After an experimental phase in her youth, Shawna Olsten longed for a marketing spot in the action sports industry. She only had one, tiny stipulation: she had to do so in the city of Vancouver. Here Shawna speaks of her trials, triumphs, but mostly her gratitude to the city that raised her.

Education, Human Rights in Afghanistan

Lauryn Oates has been working to improve the lives of children and women in Afghanistan through the power of education. Though threats against her and her colleagues lives have been made on numerous occasions, she speaks firmly on the ideals of human rights.
