Emily Campbell

Graphic Designer & Illustrator in Winnipeg

It all started with a text message. Illustrator and designer Emily Campbell and her husband dropped everything and embarked on a long, seven-month workaway of numerous European cities, thanks to a misunderstood text message. In this charming PechaKucha 20x20 talk, Emily accompanies the stories from her adventures with well-drawn illustrations of her and her husband's experiences. Listen as she regales the audience with her anecdotes, and admire her lovely illustrations that are as vibrant as her stories. From this, maybe you too will say yes to an adventure of a lifetime.

Finding Creative Play in an Optimized World

BY KATRINA CRAIG
@ VOL 39 ON SEP 05, 2019

Katrina Craig is a textile artist who constantly fights against the overly-optimized mindset of the world today. This is because she believes that in any creative endeavour, it's important to play and be focused on process rather than the end results. Here, in her PechaKucha 20x20 talk, Katrina demonstrates to us how play, exploration, and process weaves itself into her work, and encourages us to delve into the messy and unstructured when it comes to our own creative ventures.

A Journey: From Photographer to Printmaker

BY BARRY STRIEMER
@ VOL 39 ON SEP 05, 2019

In an effort to find new and exciting methods to develop photographic work that stands out from the crowd, Barry Striemer took a creative leap to establish a process for his work using screenprinting as the base for this technique. New processes and techniques take time to execute well however, so Barry's journey to improve his craft required great deals of openness, technical proficiency, and patience. In this 20x20 talk, Barry talks about his journey in exploring printmaking, and what he learned along the way.

How I Grew to Love and Make Indigenous Graphic Novels (and How I Became a Superhero)

BY NIIGAAN SINCLAIR
@ VOL 39 ON SEP 05, 2019

Niigaan Sinclair is an Anishinaabe professor, writer, and activist who loves graphic novels. However, growing up, he noticed a lack of heroes that looked like him, and any mention of Indigenous people in comics are more often than not base caricatures or stereotypes. In this enligtening PechaKucha 20x20 talk, Niigaan tells us how Indigenous culture and graphic novels are connected, what he did to help counter the negative representation of Indigenous people in graphic novels, and how he himself became a hero.

Niigaan's talk was recorded live at PechaKucha Night Winnipeg Vol. 39, on September 5, 2019, at the Park Theatre.
