BACK TO CITY

TOLEDO, OHIO Posts

So really, who's driving this thing?!

Now that the first of our events in under our belts we want to reach out and tell you a little about why we are excited about PKN!

First at bat - Crystal Gale Phelps!

Hey - I'm Crystal - an artist and lady-boss here in Toledo. I jumped into organizing PKN as a volunteer in 2010 because I experienced PKN in other cities and thought Toledo could benefit from the experience. Toledo deserves an event format that is not stuffy and full of pressure - an event with the ability to share their ideas in a relaxed way. Nothing else here is quite like it, making it a great fit for Toledo.

Next up - the rookie - Maureen Brogan!

Hey! I'm Maureen - a facebook posting, event planning, dance party destroying geek in Toledo. I met Crystal through a friend named Kim - another lady-boss and former organizer of PKN Toledo. I showed up at their event hosted at Toledo Museum of Art and knew I wanted to be a part of the awesome feeling this event brings to my city. Born and raised in Toledo I grew up with the idea that there was nothing to do here. As I become an adult (let's be honest - it's an ongoing process for us all) I continue to meet amazing people making things happen. Forget that boring idea that there is nothing to do - make your own waves! I'm excited for the wave PKN has made and will continue to make here in Toledo!

Hey Guys!
Some big changes are happening at PKN Global, here's the skinny.

As of today there are more than 770 cities participating nationwide! (how cool is that?!) To keep up with web server maintenance and development of the webpages PKN has asked each city to add $1 to the admission cost of the event. Since PKN Toledo does not currently charge admission we are now working on generating sponsorship opportunities and building content to keep everyone in the loop!

Let us know if you are interested and we will post links as we create awesome content! See you soon!

PechaKucha Toledo, Ohio Vol. 4 is coming up on February 22. PKN Toledo was recently featured in the Toledo Free Press; artist and organizer Kimberly Adams was quoted:

The presenters that we have are invested in our community in some form or another and are doing great things. It’s always exciting to see PKN come together. So many people within our community are not aware of their surroundings and everything that is going on. I think most people in attendance are surprised and pleased to hear about all the positives that are happening in Toledo.

PKN Williamsburg Vol. 2 Presentations Fran Ward sees grids and circles in the world around her. As she explains in her presentation (from PKN Williamsburg Vol. 2), she uses those references to make sense of that world and her place in it. In their shared presentation (in Czech, from PKN Usti nad Labem Vol. 2), Marek Hudáč and Matyáš Fialka talk about what it's like being a 1st grade architecture student at the Technical University of Liberec, and describe the atmosphere of the school's huge studio. PKN Guatemala City Vol. 2 Posters We really love all of the posters and flyers that Guatemala City has produced for tonight's Vol. 2, and pictured above we have yet another great promotional item to share. The rest of today's Tumblr blog additions include posters for PKN Dundee Vol. 4 (below), PKN Dunsborough Vol. 6, PKN Wellington Vol. 17, and PKN Waterville Vol. 9.  PKN Dundee Vol. 4 PKN Samara Vol. 1 PKN Samara Vol. 1 Photos Samara has had a few events now, but here's a photo gallery [Flickr] that shows off that city's very first PKN -- pictured above, an attentive crowd, and one of that night's presenters. Below, a photo from the recent PKN Toledo Vol. 3, taken by Kathie VanNess. PKN Toledo Vol. 3 Calendar As we mentioned yesterday, the following five events are happening tonight (October 25), but we have one addition (PKN Lausanne Vol. 12): PKN Guatelmala City Vol. 2, PKN Lille Vol. 2, PKN Knoxville Vol. 5, PKN Chillicothe Vol. 1, and PKN Vladimir Vol. 9. Friday has the following seven events: PKN Orlando Vol. 7, PKN Bern Vol. 19, PKN Waterville Vol. 9, PKN Koszalin Vol. 10, PKN Wellington Vol. 17, PKN Cagliari Vol. 4, and PKN Castellon de la Plana Vol. 2.

Comedy TV in Turkey, a Primer on Schizophrenia, and a Teaser from Guatemala City

PKN Lausanne Vol. 8 Presentations Can Yücel Metin's presentation (from PKN Istanbul Vol. 14) is all about a comedy TV series called Aye, Thanks! that airs Friday nights in Turkey. He is an actor on the show, as well as a writer. Presented as part of a special PechaKucha Night that was themed on "schizophrenia," Philippe Conus is a psychiatrist who used his presentation (in French, from PKN Lausanne Vol. 8) to cover all aspects of the disease, debunking many aspects that are mistaken by many. PKN Azores Vol. 3 Posters Today's additions to the Tumblr blog include posters for PKN Azores Vol. 3 (above), PKN Sunshine Coast Vol. 10, PKN Victoria Vol. 4, PKN Norman Vol. 2, PKN Melbourne Vol. 15, PKN Perth Vol. 10, and PKN Buenos Aires Vol. 17, 18, and 19. PKN Toledo Vol. 2 Photos and video Here's a small photo gallery [Flickr] for last June's PKN Toledo Vol. 2 -- above, a look at the venue (Toledo Public Library). We also have a video to share, in the form of this teaser video for the upcoming PKN Guatemala City Vol. 2 (set for September 27). httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdUJMyaG5bY Calendar Tonight's (August 29) PKNs are the following: PKN New Haven Vol. 13, PKN Tampere Vol. 7, and PKN Providence Vol. 41. Tomorrow, it's a big Thursday with these 5 events: PKN Sevilla Vol. 13, PKN St. Petersburg Vol. 21, PKN Christchurch Vol. 15, PKN Xalapa Vol. 12, and PKN Nashville Vol. 8.

PKN Curitiba Vol. 1 Presentations In a culture where robots are everywhere -- whether as a toy, in an industrial setting, or as a movie villain -- it's good to have someone like DJ Sures, CEO, roboticist, and the visionary behind EZ-Robot. Watch as he shares (from PKN Calgary Vol. 12) his passion for robots, particularly the ones that are easy to control. With "The Art of Communication" (in Portuguese, from PKN Curitiba Vol. 1), Michelle Thomé fully embraces the 20x20 format -- specifically, the numbering -- as she covers effective and efficient ways of speaking in public. PKN Bahrain Vol. 5 Posters We've got a few new posters on the Tumblr blog today: the proper poster for PKN Williamsburg Vol. 1 (we shared the flyer a week or two ago), PKN Kingston Vol. 3, PKN Katowice Vol. 7, and the poster for tonight's PKN Bahrain Vol. 5, pictured above. PKN Bahrain organizer Mohammed Jannahi adds a few details for that poster:
The poster is designed by Bahraini designer Muna Yateem, who recently launched her brand HARAKA (a common word used by Bahrainis which means to wear or do something with swagger). The idea behind the poster is making fun of Bahrainis and their reaction when they hear and pronounce PechaKucha, some find it very difficult and its even funnier when elder people try to say PechaKucha. The great thing about this parody is the fact that PechaKucha has an audience from all age groups and the word itself makes it "special" in Bahrain.
And although not a poster, here's a look at the new logo for PKN Seoul -- the series has been on hiatus for quite a few years now, but is about to relaunch this summer. PKN Seoul PKN Nara Vol. 2 Photos We've got another fresh batch of photo galleries from around the web, and if you missed the live streaming of the recent PKN Edmonton Vol. 13, you can still watch the video here, courtesy of the Edmonton Journal. Above, the scene at PKN Nara Vol. 2. Links and press A pair of links (that second link is also an invitation to read more interviews with PKN Birmingham's presenters), as well as some press coverage. Below, a scan of recent coverage for Jersey's first PKN from the Jersey Evening Post. Jersey Evening Post Calendar After a rather busy week, the PKN network slows down a bit over the weekend. Tonight (June 8) you can catch PKN Cagliari Vol. 3 and PKN Bahrain vol. 5, and then tomorrow night (Saturday) look to PKN Cancun Vol. 5, an event that was supposed to happen last month, but got postponed due to bad weather (yes, you guessed it, it's an outdoor event).

PKN Curitiba Vol. 1 Presentations We kick off a new week of presentations with one from Curitiba (Vol. 1) and one from Cork (Vol. 3). In "Underground Food" (in Portuguese), Guilherme Caldas takes us on a tour Curitiba's lesser known culinary highlights. If you've been feeling like you need to get a bit more excitement in your day, try following Niall Doherty and his "Random Acts of Courage." PKN Mendoza Vol. 4 Posters We've got a few new posters on our Tumblr blog, including the ones for PKN Mendoza Vol. 4 (above), PKN London Vol. 6, and PKN Dnipropetrovsk Vol. 1, which debuts tomorrow. Videos Instead of sharing photos today, and since there seems to be an absolute boom in these, today we share a few teaser videos that have been produced for PKNs -- we love them so much that we often play some at our PKNs here in Tokyo. Below, teaser videos for PKN Curitiba Vol. 2, PKN Tel Aviv Vol. 13, and PKN Lisbon Vol. 14. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J5alkNK6zI httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMu22YtbFiU Links
