Seeds of Growth in Tohoku

Mai Akiyoshi describes her time in the city of Ishinomaki in Miyagi after it was devastated by the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in 2011. Through helping the locals renovate and revitalize their shops and businesses, she fell in love with the relentless strength of the city's community.

A Traveler's Account of Early 20th Century Japan

After coming across Bernhard Kellermann's "Ein Spaziergang in Japan" in a used bookstore in Heidelberg in early 2013, Robert Blasiak was drawn completely into Kellermann's 100+ year old account of traveling through Japan and visiting teahouses, brothels, theaters, cedar groves and fishing villages along the way. He presents Kellermann's journey across Japan as well as his own journey as the translator of the book.

Love Hotels of Japan

Shinobu Machida, an art collector in Tokyo, shares his collection of photographs of the 'love hotels' across Japan. These photographs are especially valuable because many of these specialty hotels are being torn down in recent years. (in Japanese)

An expert in creative leadership, Stephie Knopel lends her expertise to invent a new way to say thank you. With her web app creation, Personal Heroes, users are able to thank strangers for random acts of kindness. The app also allows users to geotag their heroes, mapping our world in a different way- with an index of good, rather than bad.
