Combining Botanical Arts With Architecture

BY 李霽 LEE CHI
@ VOL 40 ON AUG 31, 2019

Lee Chi, born in Taipei in 1983, graduated from the Department of Architecture at Chung Yuan Christian University in 2007. While working on an interior design project inspired by floral elements, Lee Chi thought of his childhood years. He was reminded of a time when he was immersed in and influenced by nature. He realized his past experiences with the natural world could be a source of inspiration for new ideas. With that in mind, Lee Chi began experimenting with combining botanical arts with architecture.

In 2013, Lee Chi began to focus on developing unique botanical art installations by bringing together his background in architecture and his personal experiences in design cases, teaching, art creation, and product development. He continues to explore using botanicals under the framework of architecture, and to experiment with new ideas. His inspiration for his contemporary art comes not only from nature, but also everyday life. By reflecting upon the nature of art, analyzing society, and researching creative techniques, he is able to transform essential elements into a series of artwork which shows the insight and depth of his creative mind.

Lee Chi pushes the boundaries of his work and aspires to go beyond his own standard for excellence. He has been praised for being the first to use plants as a medium for art in Taiwan and received recognition from the internationally-known magazine, Prestige, in their 40 Under 40 of 2017 edition.

Rather than only using plants as a superficial decoration, he believes people should form a deep relationship with them. As the creative director of BOTANIPLAN VON LEE CHI, Lee Chi’s goal for the brand is to not only emphasize aesthetics, but also to create actualized works of art connecting observers with nature and societal introspection. Lee Chi and the BVLC team strive to use their creations to express this philosophy.

Lee Chi is also a ultramarathon runner, and has competed in Cambodia, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang and achieved outstanding results. The Deserts Race Series will be his next challenge.

Mr.Sci Science Factory:combine science, art and design

BY HOU-JIN LIN
@ VOL 40 ON AUG 31, 2019

Although my major professional background is architecture, I am still working in a variety of different design areas. Including architecture, interior design, communication design, product design, and catering. One of my interior design project has won the TID Design Award, and for the product design part has also won the German iF product design award, Japan GOOD DESIGN Award and German Red Dot Design Award. I regularly write columns for public media to promote a lifestyle that combines the fun of design and life aesthetics.

At the same time, in order to break through the dilemma of global design, I founded “Mr.Sci Science Factory” in 2009. I hope to combine science, art and design. Gather those works which have the core power from Taiwan and spread them to all over the world.

In recent years, I have tried to share the interests of science through self-media. So far there are more than 10 million people passionately responding, and at the same time, I hope that the correct scientific knowledge can be deeply implanted into the hearts of the people through fun communication.

Paper Oriented Projects

BY CHING-FU WANG
@ VOL 40 ON AUG 31, 2019

I was born in 1975 in Kaohsiung. Raised in the South exposed to an abundance of sunshine and nature, I was this kid with wild imaginations and critical thinking. I was also a kid who played a lot outdoors but not quite keeping up with school works. Fortunately, my family gave me a lot of freedom to explore my potentials, so I got to decide for myself what to do next. My childhood background and experiences are what makes me who I am today.

My strength lies in creative thinking, topic instigation, and integrated visual design. I am still that kid with wild imaginations when it comes to designing or simply taking note of daily sensations as inspirations. As for project implementation, it is an intuitive process that unfolds naturally.

My project, Sun Tanning, was awarded the most influential design in Hong Kong Design Week. I was a guest speaker at TEDxKowloon in Hong Kong, and one of the panel judges for the Golden Pin Design Award and the Young Pin Design Award. I own four Pinmo Pure Stores in Taiwan where I introduce a series of paper oriented projects. Paper Lab, Plant Material Lab, and Sun Tanning Project are product lines for retail. I have also developed printing stores for small quantity printing.

This week, we are traveling in part to an ancient, dried out lakebed to visit
Taipei for our City Focus. Home to just under three million residents, Taipei stands as the cultural, political, educational and economic hub of its host country, Taiwan. The city is filled with culture and incredible food, as well as many unique architectural feats like the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and Taipei 101, the former tallest building in the world. The skyline of the city provides breathtaking views in the night like the one pictured here, with lights of all different colors that shine bright for all to see.
What's more, they are hosting their Vol. 40 event at the end of August on the 31st, you will not want to miss it!
