Jenai Hooke

Artist / Alchemist in Eudlo

The magic of Indigo!

PRESENTED ON FEB 28, 2018
IN SUNSHINE COAST @ VOL 25

In this presentation Jenai Hooke reveals the magic of indigo and her fascination with the ancient art of botanical dyeing.

Jenai is a maker and an alchemist, working from her bushland studio in Eudlo where she can be found doing all kinds of amazing things from boiling up pots of Bunya husks to turn into golden silk, to collecting mud from a nearby creek to paint symbols on fabric. Jenai has travelled far and to study with the natural dye masters of Japan, France, Mexico and the USA, bringing home new knowledge to pass on to the participants of her many workshop in Australia and New Zealand. She founded the Sunshine Coast Natural Dyers Interest Group (SCNDIG) in 2015 and members share, learn, and develop their skills as dyers and artists.

The Profound Beauty of Indigo

BY ROWLAND RICKETTS
@ UNITED STATES ARTISTS 2014 ARTISTS ASSEMBLY ON MAR 24, 2015

"The choice to plant, transplant, weed, harvest, winnow, dry, compost, and ferment indigo entirely by hand is longer one of necessity. It is political. It is beautiful. It is labour. It is life."

In The Profound Beauty of Indigo from Chicago's Powered by PechaKucha Event: United States Artists 2014 Artists Assembly, Ronald Rickettsshares his story of moving to Japan to teach English and explore Japanese craft heritage. He discovered indigo leaves and had an apprenticeship at a Tokushima dye factory. He became an indigo farmer, dyer and visual artist. His work developed into creating installations, establishing a social practice and spreading the indigo art.

This was "Presentation of the Day" on Tuesday, August 12th, 2015.
