ST. AUGUSTINE Posts

"Christmas is an important family holiday.... the party being prepared is for people who have no one to be with on Christmas Eve."

In Christmas for the Christmas-less from PechaKucha Night St. Augustine Vol. 9, Ilan Wolffberg spent over 40 years living in Denmark and shares with us an occasion that keeps him going back in a small commune inside Copenhagen called Christiania. He has been part of the Christmas celebration there for 15 years and continues to be rewarded by volunteering.

"I know that this is the story of Kolkata that they would want me to share with you."

In This is Kolkata from PechaKucha Night St. Augustine Vol. 9Sarah Annay shares on the time she has spent traveling to India to help empower women using the tool she knows best: the camera.

Do we choose to cap greenhouse gas emissions? Do we choose to stop burning fossil fuels? Or do we just keep going?

Professor Matthew Brown gives us a hard look at facts of where Earth is headed in the next 100 years. In “Projection: Earth in 2100” from PKN St. Augustine Vol. 2, Matthew shows us what impact humans have had on climate change.

“We all have heart, but do we all have compassion?”

Photojournalist Walter Coker looks back on over twenty years of photography, and shares with us what it has taught him about compassion. In “Looking Back” from PKN St. Augustine Vol. 4, Walter shows us how the big and cruel life can be, and how oftentimes it is only the strong, smart, and rich who survive.

For its upcoming PechaKucha Night Vol. 6, the organizers in St. Augustine weren't satisfied to just produce 1 poster, and instead produced 3. You'll find larger versions of each on our poster Tumblr, and you can visit the Vol. 6 event page for more details on the event itself.

“I’m talking about the women throughout history who have inspired others through their foresight, ambition, courage, and downright ballsiness.”

Tattoo artist and ex-Navy Commander Sailor Cher tells us about some of the women who have inspired generations over the years. In “Inspiring Women of All Manner” from PKN St. Augustine Vol. 5, Cher goes into depth on the one woman who has held fast through the decades, and inspired her most: Betty Boop.

PechaKucha Night Vol. 4 in St. Augustine (Florida) is coming up in May -- visit the official event page for more details -- and here's a look at the fantastic poster that was produced for the event.
