The Joy of Painting

PRESENTED ON APR 28, 2018
IN KUCHING @ VOL 6

June was only 5 when she held her first paint brush. Encouraged by her father, artist Raphael Scott Ahbeng, she was free to paint anything she wanted from his leftover colours. Colours have the simple ability to evoke feelings of happiness, an idea that she loves. With an illustrative and narrative quality, her paintings are simultaneously comforting and intriguing.

June draws her inspiration and ideas from her travels abroad. But she also hopes to see more budding artists in Kuching as inspiration and subjects are plentiful here. From nature, street life, coastal areas, kampungs to the plants in our backyards, our daily lives can be enriched with colour.

The Scientific Narrative of Leonardo’s Last Supper

BY AMANDA GRIEVE
@ VOL 38 ON FEB 07, 2019

Amanda Grieve is a graduate of Wright State University, recently earning her BFA with a focus in studio painting. She is the new Gallery Director at the Dayton Society of Artists and is thrilled to be part of the great art scene in Dayton. Amanda hopes you’ll be as enthralled with art history as she is. The Scientific Narrative of Leonardo’s Last Supper is an introduction to Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper. It delves into how and why Leonardo created it, looking at conventions during the Renaissance and Leonardo’s desire to elevate the status of painting. It argues that Leonardo was using every ounce of his intellect in the creation of this wonderful painting.
