Building a Life Inside

@ VOL 7 ON AUG 30, 2018

Alicia Cole is a writer and artist in Huntsville, AL.  Born in Knoxville, TN, she moved to Huntsville at the age of four for her mother's career at NASA, where she lived until eighteen.  She traveled extensively from eighteen through thirty-seven before returning to live in Huntsville. An entirely self-taught artist, she's previously worked in fabric/embroidery and mixed media, and now creates drawings and collages while experimenting with sculpture and sculptural elements.  While her early drawings, shown here, center on hospitalization and mental health, she's currently working on both a series on aging/dilapidated signs within the Huntsville area, with the occasional sign caught while traveling through the greater region, and one on pop culture.  Her collage work, commissioned by the Science Fiction Poetry Association, challenges gender and racial parity and is featured on their SpecPo blog.  Challenged by the limitations of supplies in the hospital, she continues to limit her materials to office supplies or what can be used in a classroom, save for advancing to archival paper.  She draws heavily from graffiti and pop art as well as abstraction.  An essay about her time in the hospital, accompanied by five artworks, was recently published in Brain Mill Press' Makers on Making, BMP Voices series.  Her fabric work is in collections in New York City, Philadelphia, and Tennessee.  She lives with her husband, three animals, and five plants.  She loves coffee, plants, tattoos, animals, and art.

Reflections of a Space Cadet’s Artistic Daughter: The Journey from Selling to Commercially Licensing ART

@ VOL 7 ON AUG 30, 2018

Growing up with a physicist father and cowgirl mother, Jennifer Redstreake Geary has had quite the journey coming into her art and finding her place in the world. Her father, the Space Cadet, (having grown up watching anything Sci-Fi) always believed in her and encouraged her to pursue a living doing what she loved to do. Paint. Her mother, a constant stream of inspiration for that art, providing fur kids and gentle beasts to create in every medium she could get her hands on. Today, because of that parent’s love, she is a success. She loves her life. And she paints every day. Her work inspires humor and heart as she licenses her works all around the world. Come listen to her story.

A Caver’s Perspective

@ VOL 7 ON AUG 30, 2018

Sabrina Simón was formally trained in graphic design at Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL where she earned a B.A. in 2000 and went on to work in the graphic design field for 10+ years. Upon moving to Huntsville, Alabama, her discovery and love of caving led her to delve into vertical rope work, photography, surveying and eventually cave mapping.

Above ground Sabrina is an active member of the National Speleological Society, the Huntsville Grotto, and Huntsville Cave Rescue Unit. She is the treasurer for the North East Huntsville Civic Association, volunteering her time for a variety of community-based activities. Underground, Sabrina is a TAG (Tennessee, Alabama & Georgia) caver of 15+ years of exploring, photographing, surveying and mapping. She counts herself very lucky to have taken souvenirs in photo form from 100’s of caves, to have seen the beauty of Lechuguilla in person, to have held a world record for rope climbing if only for a single day, and to have mapped and sketched the caves of the Maya deep in the Yucatan peninsula.
