VOL 8

December 20, 2016
@ nest by AIA

Are you seeking to meet creative and awesome people? Do you love to hear cool ideas and stories of others? Are you interested in sharing your stories and experiences with others in a fun, relaxed and interesting way? If you firmly say YES, you are invited to the first Pecha Kucha Night Hanoi after 3 years.

The theme for this coming Pecha Kucha Night is GUILTY PLEASURE. What story or idea triggers in you when you see this theme? Are you willing to share with the community?

(List of speakers will be updated in the future. If you want to share your story, please register by Tuesday 13th December)

And hold on there, if you are new to Pecha Kucha format, we are explaining soon below.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT IS PECHA KUCHA?
Pecha Kucha 20x20 is a simple presentation format where you show 20 images, each for 20 seconds. The images advance automatically and you talk along to the images. The first Pecha Kucha Night was organized in Tokyo in 2003, and has gone virally to more than 900 cities all over the world now.
In a word, Pecha Kucha Night is an informal and fun event for people to relax, learn, share and connect all at the same time

----------------------------------------------------------------------
WOW HOW COOL!!! WHAT KIND OF STORIES CAN I EXPECT?
Literally anything that people think worth sharing: a personal story, an idea, a product or project, some interesting snaps of your last adventure, etc. Think of it like a box of chocolate
In each Pecha Kucha Night Hanoi, we will listen to 5-6 stories, and have time to mingle with everyone in the room.

---
I LOVE IT ALREADY! CAN I PRESENT MY STORY?
Absolutely. And don’t let the word “presentation” scare you away. The beauty of Pecha Kucha is that anyone can present!
Each meetup will come with a theme (because limitation encourages creativity). Listen to yourself to see if the theme triggers any story or idea in you. Then if you are ready, register with the organizers through Google Form. The stories are chosen to present based on the diversity of ideas, people, topics, it’s not that one story is better than others.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

She also is a freelance writer, with publications in The Diplomat, Huffington Post, Vietnam Heritage, and other Vietnamese-American projects. She works on her own creative writing in her blog The Life of Clouds.

Before Hanoi, she spent five years in Huế co-creating The Lighthouse: A Creative Leadership Experience for disadvantaged kids as the Executive Director of the Friends of Hue Foundation. It was her time living, working, and yes, playing with the children at FHF Children’s Shelter where those children taught her that youth are incredible assets to the community, and they’re beyond capable of designing solutions for community-based problems.

Now as an “adult,” Ái also designs and facilitates unblocking creativity workshops for other “adults,” because everyone’s really a kid at heart. =)

"I’m a travel enthusiast from Ha Noi who is highly driven by local cultures around the world. My passion for travel and engagement in multicultural environment began in 2007 when I joined the international student organization called AIESEC, with whom I went to Wroclaw (Poland) for 2 months in 2009 and New Delhi (India) for 3 months in 2010. Furthermore, I also lived in Ho Chi Minh City (or Saigon) in the South of Viet Nam in 2011-2012. In 2015, I received UK Government’s Chevening scholarship and spent a year in London studying for an MA in Art administration & Cultural policy at Goldsmiths college. One of my life goals is to be able to live and experience local life in as many places as possible, and I believe I’m on the way to achieve it.

Currently, I’m a co-owner of Hanoi Grapevine, the best online platform for arts and culture in Viet Nam which has been realized by British Council a major virtual creative hub of the country. The site is bilingual (English-Vietnamese) and is the best source for anyone that wants to look into the contemporary arts scene in Viet Nam. Porn is Milk | Samuel Díaz Fernández | PechaKucha Hanoi Vol 8

Recorded on December 20th. Samuel Díaz Fernández shares his guilty pleasure with porn and how it all relates to everyone.

About speaker:

Samuel Díaz Fernández
Filmmaker - Photographer - Educator, The School of Slow Media // Studio DIFFÉ in Hanoi Viet Nam
www.studio-diffe.com

Samuel is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and educator who has spent the past 10 years designing communications tools that promote communal and social impact. He is the founder of Studio DIFFÉ, a digital agency that helps build empathy in communities worldwide through video and photography. He is also the founder of The School of Slow Media.

A Colombian-born immigrant across 4 continents, Samuel’s commitment to stories unfolding at the hemlines of society is what defines his passion for education. His work with the United Nations and the international NGO sector has led him to design hands-on media and peace trainings for young people in Oslo, Paris, NYC, Kosovo, Nairobi, Cambodia and across Southeast Asia. He strives to see people from different communities, creating and listening together, tracing hybrid narratives with their hands and bodies.

Before working in Geneva, Switzerland both as the global coordinator for communications and advocacy of the World YMCA and as a communications consultant for the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Samuel also worked in the USA as a public school teacher for at risk-bilingual students and as a camp curriculum trainer for abused and neglected kids.

After spending a year in Cambodia and the Philippines exploring the crossroads of violence, peace and story (particularly in young people) he has relocated recently to Hanoi, Vietnam.

In 2014, Samuel was invited to join the leadership team of “Designing for Social Innovation and Leadership” (DSIL), a global social impact accelerator program running its pilot year out of Thailand and Cambodia. The programme was certified by the Center for Executive Education that is part of the UN-Mandated University for Peace (UPEACE) in Costa Rica. With the support of the DSIL community, he founded “Track X: Creative Media Lab” in 2015 to create a disruptive storytelling programme focused on communal and mindful narrative practices. This would eventually form the foundation for the birth of "The School of Slow Media" in 2016. www.schoolofslowmedia.com

As a self-identified nomad, Samuel feels most at home wherever there is Totoro to keep him grounded in nature and magic. So he looks for Totoro everywhere.
