Rectangle Studio

Rectangle is an interface design studio based in Glasgow, Scotland, founded by Daniel Powers (US) and Lizzie Malcolm (UK) in August 2017. They work with information
and technology and content and form to develop projects in various media. With a focus on what they call “site-speci c interfaces”, Rectangle writes software, builds tools, creates archives, designs interfaces and explores technologies. All projects are designed and developed inhouse. Outcomes encompass the physical and digital. Computation is central, but not always visible. / @rctngl

More Human Than Human

@ VOL 2 ON JUN 30, 2011

Toby Barnes discusses machine-learning and goes into depth on the development of robots and artificial intelligence. He speaks on the power of algorithms, and their application to finance, relationships, facial recognition, and what impact this technology will have on our societies.

Tangible Interfaces

@ VOL 14 ON FEB 28, 2012

Our interaction with technology these days primarily involves touch displays, keyboards, and mice. We spend hours manipulating these tools, and getting results/output via a glowing LCD screen. While interaction designer Carlos Velasquez believes computers aren't going anywhere, he has the unique thought that they will eventually serve their purpose as a tool that involves more tangible interaction and response.

Droning Our Lives Away

@ VOL 1 ON JUL 04, 2014

Timothy Bell has been living in Germany over three  decades. As an American abroad, he has seen technology advance from mobile phones to drone surveillance.  On the other hand, Hasnain Bokhari has only spent one decade in Germany studying and living far from his East Asian roots and has seen first-hand the effects of such advanced drone technology.  However, in this talk both speakers come together to show the controversial debate in word, imagery and policy.

False Positive

@ VOL 15 ON FEB 04, 2016

"Let's get personal."

In False Positive from PechaKucha Night Buffalo Vol. 15, artist, architect and educator Mark Shepard reminds us that it is not just the trust we place in network infrastructure but also our willingness to trade bits of personal data for access to online services that renders us vulnerable. Caught between the ruse and exploit, we find ourselves subject to ever more sophisticated forms of profiling, both online and off. Yet if algorithmically generated data-bodies are our future, they are also prone to error. Sherpard's project FALSE POSITIVE deploys text messaging, stealth infrastructure, street intervention, and data visualization to enact a surveillance conspiracy engaging the public in an intimate, techno-political conversation with the mobile technologies on which they depend.

Food, The Commons & Connection

@ VOL 40 ON AUG 01, 2019

Michael Reynolds holds a vision of a Commons-based future that supports thriving communities. Food is one of those universal truths that bind us all...we all need to eat. However, our experience of food is determined by many factors - social, economic, cultural, physical, political...some are positive influences and some not as positive. In fact, our experience of basic humans needs, like food, is one of the most visible signs of inequity in the world. This needs to change and we can do this through a value shift and a present-day reimagining of The Commons. In this talk, Michael will share some of the joys and learnings from the unfolding journey of Roimata Food Commons, whilst also acknowledging influences from community-building work for Food Resilience Network Inc. We have the technology to invite the change we need, we have the climate crisis to motivate us..all we need now is the heart and means to step into that brave new world.
