Tracing Something That Isn't There

It may seem impossible to trace something like a memory, a movement, or something that is too large to see all at once. However, Theresa Gooby takes on this idea and develops it into a series that shows what is missing in disused spaces such as an empty apartment, an old shipping port, a crumbling house, and an over 300 mile long river.

"Presentation of the Day" on August 9, 2014.

Memory Space

Caro and Mike did a live performance with tape recorder, voice and sound effects: An audio visual work in progress about isolation and memory of the human body & spirit in the context of empty, abandoned spaces and places. They used the setting of a former Russian military base in the town of Wünsdorf to re-tell their story of ghosts that reappear in the form of voices, images and sounds. Kind of spooky!

The Maker Addict Movement

@ VOL 25 ON MAR 05, 2013

Liz Neely is a maker addict. She creates things that have no purpose; only to see if she could make something out of her own imagination. She does not believe in the impossible and therefore challenges others to thing freely and create because no matter the lack of experience you may have nor how impossioble it may seem, it can be made.

Memory of Place

@ VOL 14 ON FEB 12, 2015

My current work investigates the naive trust we place upon our shelter system’s ability to protect us. My interest lies within the conflicting ideas of protection, vulnerability and hope, during and after abrupt natural destruction. As pioneers and immigrants in new places and spaces, we believe and invest in the security of the systems we create. This belief in the security of stability is called into question during great disasters. Such was mine in the aftermath of the biggest natural disaster, my country has seen in decades, where a 6.3 magnitude earthquake awoke the land, in my home town of Otautahi / Christchurch, New Zealand in February, 2011.
I am intrigued by the irrevocable shift in one’s sense of self in relation to place that occurs after the illusion of stability ceases to exist. In these moments, the architectural landscape can become both threatened and threatening. I am mentally cataloging the beauty of our pioneering and afraid of the consequences in entrusting so much with our current systems of belief.

Shaping Space and Realities

@ VOL 4 ON MAY 18, 2015

"What I find funny is the idea that doomsday preppers think they can inoculate themselves from effects of an apocalypse by collecting things we have manufactured in the last 100 years to protect themselves from the future, but in fact what we need more are tools and solutions to overcome the quandary that the demise of our species is at our own hands."

In Shaping Space and Realities from PechaKucha Night Brooklyn Vol. 4, self-proclaimed design evangelist, educator, and promoter of play Lauren Slowik explores the infinite possibilities of shaping space and realities with advancing 3-d printing technology to create new physical connections. Join her as she goes deep into the rabbit hole of how our future can be reimagined with a shift in thinking.
