The Challenges of Mid-Rise Construction

BY ROLAND ROM COLTHOFF
@ VOL 26 ON SEP 27, 2013

Roland Rom Colthoff of RAW design explains the opportunities and challeges of new mid-rise construction in Toronto. Mid-rise construction is an investment by purchasers in not only a condo, but also a neighborhood. This affirmation of the importance of the street and urban environment as a place to live, shop, and work has led to the design of unusually shaped and unique interior environments and exceptionally generous outdoor spaces.

Prior to Construction

BY LEONARD VAN MUNSTER
@ VOL 17 ON MAY 24, 2016

Construction 2000

BY JUHO VIITASALO
@ VOL 14 ON OCT 01, 2016

Juho Viitasalo shares Construction 2000, a unique geometric steel sculpture in Helsinki, Finland. Its most eye catching feature is a 600 kg pyramid that seems to float in air without any support. This 10 meter tall physics defying structure has stood since 1982 and is truly unique in the world. However it is still somewhat unknown. Construction 2000 was designed by Markku Viitasalo and now his son wants to take the design to the world out of the confines of the office block where it stands in Helsinki. This was "Presentation of the Day" on June 3rd, 2017.

BY VICKI FRANKS
@ VOL 6 ON SEP 16, 2016

Vicki Franks, with her husband Shane, built Benton Harbor's first container home in 2015, a beautiful space that will make us rethink what's possible in real estate. The inspiration to do this hit at the crossroads of a trip she took and the time the couple snagged an outrageously affordable lot in Benton Harbor. Vicki's PK is eye candy for design lover's!

Under Construction

BY ELIRAN ASHRAF
@ VOL 16 ON MAR 01, 2018

The inspiration of my work came as I went full circle with my "textile heritage", watching my yemenite grandmother wearing her authentic clothing pieces in modern day Israel.
These yemenite clothing pieces inspired by the local architecture have a strong sense of time and place. In my creation and research I am trying to express a sense of roots in a world with no boundaries. UNDER/CONSTRUCTION is a fashion brand inspired by the mix between urban and tribal elements.

A 'Top Secret' Hole in the Ground and Other Hush Hush War-Time Construction in Selwyn

BY ROBYN BURGESS
@ VOL 39 ON APR 27, 2019

Robyn Burgess is a built heritage surveyor and historian. She has had the great fortune to have had many years working in the field of heritage identification and management, in both public and private sector roles. In New Zealand she has held senior heritage positions at the Department of Conservation and Opus International Consultants, and currently works for Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga as a heritage advisor covering Canterbury and the West Coast. Her favourite roles overseas have been to record at-risk historic buildings for the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England and, in three brief but glorious stints, surveying ancient archaeological sites in Greece.

Robyn is living proof that if you study what really interests you, then chances are you can thrive in a career working in that field too. She studied history, art history and philosophy the University of Canterbury, museum studies at Massey University and, as a mid-career professional, has had the joy of hands-on heritage conservation training in Italy and China.

In this PechaKucha Robyn will enlighten us about a former ‘top secret’ World War Two construction effort in the Selwyn District.

NetZero houses: How we can adopt forward thinking building construction

BY LUSINE GHUSHCHYAN
@ VOL 32 ON JUL 10, 2019

Lusine Ghushchyan will present under the title“NetZero houses: How we can adopt forward-thinking building construction”.

The growing concerns about rising energy prices, energy independence and the impact of climate change show buildings to be as the primary energy consumer in Armenia. This fact emphasizes the importance of targeting building use as key to decreasing the nation’s energy consumption. Currently, there are a small number of NetZero buildings in the world and Armenia has a huge potential to adopt these strategies to decrease energy use and reduce dependence on fossil fuel.
