Cytomine is a free software allowing to navigate in very large bio-medical images via a web interface, and to annotate collaboration structures of interest. When the question of creating a spin-off was addressed, the open source nature of the software led the team to create a social purpose cooperative.

Kristofer Carta has a winding past, moving from politics to sociology to software development. Kristofer feels that people do not understand software well enough - Who it comes from, and what that means.

If software is just theories written down in code, then what happens when the core of writers is almost uniformly from the same demographic? "Software is people", Kristofer says, as he urges us to focus on getting all children and especially women interested in this field.
