PechaKucha Night joins Chalk the Block again this year on Friday, October 12 at 7:00pm.  Join us for an evening of thinking and drinking as an exciting lineup of presenters share their passion.  PechaKucha Night v.20 will take place at the Foundation Room directly across Oregon Street from San Jacinto Plaza. We have a great lineup of artists, designers, photographers, filmmakers and creatives who will be presenting. Admission is FREE and a cash bar will be open.  20 images x 20 seconds.

Metamorphosis: Trash to Treasure

Three years ago Candace Printz and her high school art students created the It's Your World Project after winning a national contest which brought Chelsea Clinton to their kickoff event. Today the environmental/art group has continued to grow, maintaining their Adopt-a-Highway cleanups, giving free recycled art workshops in the community, hosting a region-wide art contest/exhibit, and pushing for bigger and better goals for the future.

UTEP Graphic Design Students Representing El Paso
UTEP Graphic Design students Ricky Covarrubias and Mariana López discuss a particular poster design project that has impacted the way they view their city. Additionally, they will also focus on highlighting the art festival Chalk the Block, one of the most important public events in the Southwest region, in which they are proud to be featured this 2018 season.

The River and the Wall

Jay Kleberg shares the story of a team of diverse adventurers embarked on an epic 1,200-mile journey along the United States/Mexico border, down the Rio Grande in December 2017 to experience the vast landscapes before further construction of a border wall. During the horse, mountain bike, and canoe-powered journey, they encountered personal stories from both sides of the border, examined differing immigration viewpoints, and explored the impacts to wildlife, public lands, private landowners, and all who call the borderlands home. The 72-day journey is part of the feature documentary THE RIVER AND THE WALL was released in 2019 and is available on itues movies.

Maggie Asfahani is the proprietress of the city’s finest all day Brunch establishment, Salt + Honey, which could be credited with starting a mass firestorm of Brunch offerings from other restaurants who were left feeling as if they missed the boat when Maggie opened her doors. Maggie’s brother, Rida Asfahani was the architect who realized her dreams in brick and mortar to create an addictive ambiance that keeps you wanting for more.

Derek Caulfield presents us with his sculptural works dating from 2012 to the artworks he is creating today. The works display Derek’s processes and evolution as an artist - showing the progression in his understanding of work self. Some of his more recent furniture pieces shared play into Derek’s overall trajectory of calculation and intuition within his work.

Choosing Art for Your Home

Karime Lupus is a Chicana contemporary painter within the El Paso area. Born in Chihuahua, raised in Juarez she has lived most of her life now in the U.S. while exploring visual biliteracy. Tonight she shares on how to approach an artist for the acquisition of locally sourced artwork to enrich one's home or office space. To illustrate, Karime uses local examples representing the various styles and flavors of art found in our border region.
