The Theremin

Lev Termen is an inventor, and his invention is the theremin -- you may recognize it from the sound you could hear in the classic Stark Trek series. If you watch the presentation, you'll hear the distinctive sound it produces at the end. (in German)

Experiments with the Theremin

Wynne Palmer is part of the Vancouver Experimental Theremin Orchestra. This group explores what can be done with the unique Theremin instrument, including use of new techniques and collaboration with other performers. Wynne gives us a brief history of the instrument, and discusses her desire to incorporate the instrument in her independant art practice.

Her artistic and architecural studies allowed her to overcome some (but not all!) of her obsessive compulsive behaviors, through encaustic painting and pattern making.

Carving Clarity

A Pennsylvania native residing on the North Shore of O‘ahu since 2008, Steven Kean is an artist working primarily in the woodcut method of relief printmaking.  His work is driven by a passion for the process and a love affair with the ocean.

Kean holds a B.S. in Art Education from Temple University and is a current member of the Honolulu Printmakers.  He teaches art to 4th and 5th grade students at Mililani Mauka and Sunset Beach Elementary Schools, and in the Museums outreach program.

In 2016 he was chosen as the featured artist of the Haleiwa Arts Festival and this year he is the official artist for the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach

The Art of Biology

Mehdi Doumi is from Algeria and England, studied biomedical engineering, and is a technical leader in Research and Innovation at L’Oreal USA - researching human perception of cosmetic products.  He has been part of NPO Ligo Project, promoting science in U.S. culture through humor and videography.  He also enjoys carpentry, improv, and drawing satirical cartoons.  Over the last 4 years he has committed himself to creating abstract artwork to any K-12 educator across the USA.  He hopes that each art piece stimulates student curiosity about math and science topics, especially in a challenging teaching environment.

Surf photographer U-SKE travels the oceans of the world, especially focusing on Hawaii in the winter, with a pair of surfing fins and a camera. His photos have been shown in many surf magazines. He will present a story of a moment surfing the waves through his amazing pictures, and moreover he will talk about the passion for photography he feels from shooting in nature!
