Join the best of the best for a celebration of local produce and innovative practice, brought to you by the daring foodies who make it happen. With an array of talking points that will get you thinking (and salivating), we’ll be unpacking the circular economy created by a vibrant local food scene. Come and support the local businesses making waves across the country with their bold vision and outstanding fare. Introducing PechaKucha Night Christchurch – Food for Thought. An intimate event with quick-fire talks.

This event is a collaboration with The Narrative Co. and Brown Bread as part of The Christchurch Food Chase month and celebration of North Canterbury Wine Region.

Connecting people to our land through food

Angela Clifford is on a mission to reconnect us with our food. A story-teller, she walks the talk as the co-owner of The Food Farm, a small farm in North Canterbury which grows all of its own food. But she is also the leader of a national food movement, Eat New Zealand. She believes that food can give meaning and understanding to life, connecting us to our people and our land. In this PechaKucha she introduces us to her life and explains how her home & family inspires her to tell the New Zealand food story.

Life Changing Wine

Alanna Chapman is the co-founder of 27seconds. A local wine brand that gives 100% of their profits away to help survivors of slavery. Never thinking she'd ever enter the world of wine, Alanna found herself in love with Pete (Chapman) who runs his family vineyard Terrace Edge in North Canterbury. In this PechaKucha, Alanna shares the story of 27seconds playing a part in helping end modern day slavery.

For Cheeses sake!

Daniel Jenkins started Kaikoura cheese with no previous experience in cheese making or farming whatsoever. With a background in Rock climbing, Surfing and Skiing Daniel has utilised his recreational history to produce some of the funkiest cheeses in the world.

Vineyard Ferment

Nik Mavromatis has cooked some food, drunk some wine and spent the last 7 years wandering the globe trying to convince unsuspecting wine drinkers that North Canterbury is one of the greatest places on earth. You may remember him from such places as Mediterranean Foods, The Bicycle Thief, The Real Sausage Co. Pyramid Valley Vineyards or Prince Albert Wines.

Eat Local July

Simone Bensdorp is an artist and teacher with a passion for food and sustainability. For the month of July, she has committed to only eating food grown and produced within 200 km of her home! Known as 'Eat Local July', this experiment aims to change personal eating habits, start real conversations about food, and celebrate local produce. In this Pechakucha, Simone will share what she has learnt this July, from the challenges to the triumphs.

Sage & Seeds

Kate Spence is a changemaker and leader, with a strong belief in the power of business to change the world. She is an entrepreneur, business and marketing-freelancer, coach, mentor who has co-founded two social enterprises. She believes people need more creativity, community and people have more power than they think. She loves connecting with people and thinks Christchurch is unlike any other city as the residents are focused on creating an eco-system that’s acting local and thinking global. Kate shares her story, explaining why she created Sage & Seed, through the art of making sourdough.

Journey to Reality

Penelope Naish (Pen) owns with her husband and family, organic & biodynamic winery Black Estate in North Canterbury. She manages the business, including the Black Estate Restaurant, Cellar Door and B & B. Pen changed tack in life 9 years ago - from living and working in cities to living with the land. Living in North Canterbury, with its diverse foods & vineyards, strong community, mountains, rivers and sea has been an unforeseen privilege for her. In this PechaKucha, Pen shares her Black Estate story so far, how wine was the gateway to organics and her belief that real food & wine can connect people to nature and the truth.

Working with Dinosaurs

Jack Hill grew up on the vineyard of The Boneline. During this time he has witnessed and been involved with the family business of growing grapes and making wine. Jack tells the story of how The Boneline has evolved through a childhood of fossil hunting and best pet lead sheep competitions, bringing him to where he is today, back on the property working with his family.

Vicky Harris works for Laura Fergusson Trust(Canterbury) one of her roles in the organisation is the Operations Manager for Can Do Catering. In this PechaKucha, Vicky shares the story of some of the members from the catering team and the difference it has made to their lives.

Food, The Commons & Connection

Michael Reynolds holds a vision of a Commons-based future that supports thriving communities. Food is one of those universal truths that bind us all...we all need to eat. However, our experience of food is determined by many factors - social, economic, cultural, physical, political...some are positive influences and some not as positive. In fact, our experience of basic humans needs, like food, is one of the most visible signs of inequity in the world. This needs to change and we can do this through a value shift and a present-day reimagining of The Commons. In this talk, Michael will share some of the joys and learnings from the unfolding journey of Roimata Food Commons, whilst also acknowledging influences from community-building work for Food Resilience Network Inc. We have the technology to invite the change we need, we have the climate crisis to motivate us..all we need now is the heart and means to step into that brave new world.
