Township & Tourism, SidebySide

@ VOL 50 ON SEP 04, 2018

Cape Town is one of the most divided, and yet pluralist, cities in the world. After growing up in the US for the majority of his childhood, social entrepreneur, musician and cultural activist Jason Woolf moved to the city and confronted the absurdity head-on. This is his story of living in Khayelitsha and building Umbiyozo Foundation, South Africa’s largest alliance of traditional song-and-dance community projects, as well as his plan to revitalize and unite the city, in partnership with the tourism industry.

Indian Classical Music and the Guru-Shishya Tradition

@ VOL 50 ON SEP 04, 2018

Along with learning the techniques of rendering music, when a dedicated disciple shares the values and vision of his teacher, a “Guru-Shishya” bond is established. An insightful guru makes sure that the disciple rises above the aesthetics and connects with the divine, a remarkable tradition of Indian Classical Music.

The Future of Relationships

@ VOL 50 ON SEP 04, 2018

Almost half of South Africa’s children grow up fatherless, fewer people marry and there are more divorces than ever before. Noting the model of human relationships as failing, Mark proposes a ‘new normal’ and ways to better navigate and support human relationships. From multiple perspectives he reframes the human relationship cycle from dating to marriage, and from parenting to co-parenting.

Sustainable Fashion

@ VOL 50 ON SEP 04, 2018

I started researching the brands I support and the garments in my wardrobe, and realised i need to become a Conscious Consumer. My wardrobe was bursting at the seems and I was funding fast fashion. More research led me to the Rana Plaza Collapse and the conditions the factory workers worked in which made me more aware of why I need to know who made my clothes. #WhoMadeMyClothes is now a global movement through the Fashion Revolution which was started after the Rana Plaza collapse. I have just done two courses on sustainable fashion, and would also like to touch on my findings when i researched a pair of Zara jeans in my wardrobe. Attached are sample slides with talking points & images.

World Record painting in support of Rhinos

@ VOL 50 ON SEP 04, 2018

He plans to set a Guinness World Record for the largest painting ever (1 hectare or 10000m2) made up of 1200 life size Rhino paintings painted by the public around the world. After the certification by Guinness it will be taken to Vietnam and put on display to raise awareness and hopefully create a reduction in demand for their horns. He believes this is the only way our Rhinos can be saved as desperate poachers will continue to risk their lives if the rewards are so high.

Homeless in Cape Town

@ VOL 50 ON SEP 04, 2018

Two years ago with the Cape Argus, Danny and his team created awareness about the people living on the streets in Cape Town. Danny was one of them.
What was supposed to be a 15-day diary has now been running for over 2 years.
In these two years, Danny has managed to network with the most remarkable people and the homeless today are better equipped to face life again.
