Compassion is Photography

@ VOL 28 ON NOV 24, 2016

Laina Brown is an art student at the U of M, a social advocate, and owner of her own business Laina Brown Photography. She loves to enter into people’s monumental events or everyday lives to document and artistically render their memories as a collaborator with them. This love has taken her to spaces like Winnipeg’s “Meet Me at the Bell Tower”, to spaces such as Auschwitz and Treblinka with the March of Remembrance and Hope, to the boarders of Eastern Turkey, and to beautiful weddings all across Western Canada. In each place it is the people she is most interested in, and how they make meaning from their environments - listening and compassion as the keys to successful photography.

Compassion for the Darkness

@ VOL 2 ON OCT 24, 2018

Mental health can be considered an epidemic in North America - but are other countries more effective in providing care to those suffering? Emmy Chahal's talk is informed by her lived experience and personal research into international models that work more compassionately to see the humanity of each person facing mental health challenges. A new model of mental health will be discussed - one that honours the whole person. This new model is Emmy's vision of what mental health care could look like if we bridge the brilliance of the human mind with compassion for the darkness that most of us face at some point in our lives.
