Featured Presentation

David Benjamin is Principal at The Living, a design firm that brings architecture and design to life — literally. David expounds upon some of the amazing projects his firm uses to combine natural, biological intelligence and artificial intelligence to find new solutions to old problems.

Whether it’s using living mussels and sensors to understand changes in water quality, or growing biodegradable bricks using the root-like structures of mushrooms and agricultural waste, and then building a structure using 10 thousand of these, the projects in action are a small window into our future.

Faster than Light

@ VOL 128 ON SEP 30, 2015

"Although neutrinos are the smallest particle...they may be the reason the universe exists at all."

In 'Faster than Light" From Tokyo Vol. 128, Particle physicist Euan Richard works at Super-Kamiokande, a particle detector about a kilometre underground in the Gifu Mountains in Japan, studying for the mysterious sub atomic particle, the Neutrino. The Neutrino is fundamental particle meaning it can't be divided into anything anything smaller and exists everywhere in the universe, including a trillion in our own bodies. Very little is know about the particle, but it has been suspected that it has the power to turn anti-matter into matter, preventing the universe from collapsing on itself, thus its properties challenge and inform our current understanding of the universe. In an attempt to continue updating our understanding of the ever expansive universe, Euan and his team push the envelope of science, focused on one of its smallest components.

Startups in Space

@ VOL 127 ON JUL 29, 2015

"Nowadays we have new tech. Everybody has an iPhone and actually these are more powerful than any of the satellites now in space. And thats the idea. We are basically using them to produce space stuff that is way more powerful and much less expensive."

In Startups in Space from PechaKucha Night Tokyo Vol. 127, spacecraft developer at Axelspace in Tokyo, Lucas Bremond catches us up on the accomplishments of the space programs of past and present, reminding us that many of historical cosmic triumphs were achieved with less computing power then that of our smartphones. He then turns our imaginations to the future, proposing a new age of space exploration where the playing field has been levelled, the barrier of entry lowered, an exciting new era of new inexpensive tech in space, which we can all potentially participate, and for the benefit of all.

Shaping Space and Realities

@ VOL 4 ON MAY 18, 2015

"What I find funny is the idea that doomsday preppers think they can inoculate themselves from effects of an apocalypse by collecting things we have manufactured in the last 100 years to protect themselves from the future, but in fact what we need more are tools and solutions to overcome the quandary that the demise of our species is at our own hands."

In Shaping Space and Realities from PechaKucha Night Brooklyn Vol. 4, self-proclaimed design evangelist, educator, and promoter of play Lauren Slowik explores the infinite possibilities of shaping space and realities with advancing 3-d printing technology to create new physical connections. Join her as she goes deep into the rabbit hole of how our future can be reimagined with a shift in thinking.
